Original (English): The magic voice of miss mysterious (2005)

The guys are rolling – the bass is placed properly forward to provide the rhythmic bounce. Zoran Žkrinjar has assembled a bunch of swingers to match his inimitable style and compositional ability! It all comes together on “the magic voice of miss mysterious”.

From the first note of the first theme, they swing. There is, of course, a supreme rhythm section led by Zoran himself to underpin the soloists on this double CD – one part live and the other recorded in a studio. The studio recording aids and abets the compositional joys that Zoran has laid down. The groove on the live album begins well on the first track and continues with a vengeance on track 2, Amadeus.com, on which, following an inspired trumpet solo, Zoran pulls out the stops and takes off full flight into his piano contribution. The following saxophonist is a gruff tenor swinger that takes you back to the times when this sort of jazz was yet to be overtaken by Scandinavian cool, and at one point the fans should have been going wild at the glorious cooking. The magic is all instrumental here. We turn for a breather to the magic scatting voice of miss mysterious, given to us by a thoroughly well-known Irena Vidic. Zoran has come up with a very identifiable melody that punches forward to an ultimate Herbie Hancock-like loping groove – all given great impulse by the percussionist. The saxophonist gets it pretty close to down home and the lady makes it happen right along with the musicians. Here is Zoran making his own patterns and cascading notes around the theme. We find something of a Watermelon Man theme on track 4 (gr, gr, groovie). It is here that the tenor gets even closer to down home and the trumpet player seems to have caught the bug and we hear Zoran’s rendition of modern funk at its best as the chops proliferate. Curiously, it is Zoran himself who holds back, offering only fills and a few pretty runs before banging back into the heart of the matter.
In the end, of course, we are waiting for some piano trio jazz and the inevitable romantic Zoran who will tear our hearts out. Fille rouge has the makings of a great love theme. Soppy old critics, like yours truly, will remember this one. There should be lyrics because the melody is strong enough. Nevertheless, this little pianistic meander has us weepy in the nicest possible way. And then we are taken back to the reason to be, and we are introduced to the performers – in Slovene. OK, but they are all swingers and the language of music obviously takes us beyond all rhyme and reason. Oh, brother, that guy on bongos sure knows how to create the right groove. The percussion brings Zoran’s solo to a lovely bit of burning swing and then, right out of the blue, the soprano sax gets us even more nicely into the sort of mood that we never wish to live without because the cooking continues and there seems no real reason to stop – but stop they do! Finally (track 6) is by no means the final word because we get a bonus Fille rouge and we see the purpose of a second take because it is here that the melody is become more strongly rendered and there is a chance for the percussionist to offer his support to a fuller degree.

The studio recordings are brighter, cleaner and will be a joy to the people with all that expensive equipment. It bangs in with a sort West Coast ensemble intro to Mr. B-a-c-h, which is a very memorable theme led by a tenor saxophonist who seems to get tougher each time we hear him. The trumpet player is assured, swinging and utterly pertinent! There is a lovely piano trio interlude and Zoran shoots high with this one, perhaps reaching for the ultimate jazz interpretation of what solid swing is all about.
Track 2 (Fille rouge – à la band) is Zoran’s further exploration of the tune that could easily become a love theme for a great movie and give Zoran a second career. Watch out for the next album, Zoran Goes to Hollywood! Ok, I’m only joking. On the other hand, we all have to eat and this tune simply reeks of success! We hear on track 4 (Springtime – string time) that Zoran has again conjured a strong theme from the hat and he must have stayed up late nights get all this lot together. But it is worth it! We are hearing some new additions to what has long been a slowly diminished standard repertoire! And the one thing Zoran can’t relinquish is his romantic nature! As already mentioned, the studio versions are crisper than the live performances, and we hear a certain degree of freedom, attuned to the charts, which is brought about by the need only to satisfy a microphone and not an audience!

All in all – a tremendous chance to swing in your own home. Play the CD and bop to the groove! There is a tremendous amount of fun and excitement here. This is jazz at its most infectious! Lawrence Brazier

Recenzija: The magic voice of miss mysterious (2005)

Dobro nažigajo, ti fantje − bas je v zvočnosti pravilno spredaj, kar zagotavlja ritmično poskočnost. Zoran Škrinjar je zbral skupino izvrstnih glasbenikov/svingerjev, nadvse primernih za njegov neposnemljivi slog in skladateljsko veščino! Vse to se je zlilo v celoto na albumu “the magic voice of miss mysterious”.

Zoran tu ustvarja lastne vzorce in virtuozno obigrava temo.

Četrta skladba, gru, gru, groovie, nekoliko spominja na temo Watermelon Man Herbieja Hancocka.

Studijski posnetki so svetlejši in jasnejši in bodo v neizmerno veselje poslušalcem s pregrešno dragimi napravami.

Če potegnemo črto − album »the magic voice of miss mysterious« je izvrstna priložnost, da zasvingate v lastnem domu. Zavrtite si ga in poplesujte na groove! Bop to the groove! Užitek in vznemirjenje sta zagotovljena. To je jazz v najbolj nalezljivi obliki!
